I will post some some articles regarding Serbia here in response to some of the comments made in the Kosovo topic posted here. I don\'t want to post them all on that thread as it may hinder the discussion there and simply go unnoticed. If you are interested in the events there I encourage you to read these few snippets which will give a good background into and thats happening to Orthodox Serbs as well as how difficult of a situation this says. Please keep Orthodox Serbia in your prayers.

Serbian KOSOVO and METOHIJA
The magnitude of Kosovo reverberates across the centuries. It has survived 609 years and throughout the succeeding generations Kosovo has become the inspiration of an entire nation. And through its grandeur and its religious example it has influenced other nations to seek freedom. Kosovo permanently changed the face of Europe and altered history. Kosovo, 100 years before Columbus sailed for the New World, was a statement for religious freedom and the belief that no man had a right to rule another. Rather than to consent to become slaves to tyranny, the Serbs willingly gave their lives for their religious belief. Seldom in history have we witnessed such a commitment. The Serbs on the Kosovo Field not only paid with the staggering loss of 77,000 lives in one day of battle, but the Serbian nation suffered 500 years of Ottoman slavery as the consequence. Historians have never spoken of Kosovo as though it were an event in the past that will never happen again. Through the centuries, Serbian sacrifice and Kosovo have become synonymous.
The Serbian people have continually assumed that in every century they would again find it necessary to defend their rights to their land, self-determination, and freedom of worship. History in the Balkans continuously repeats itself! In 1690, more than 180,000 Serbs were forced from Kosovo and, again, an equal number were exiled in 1737. After the Congress of Berlin, in 1878, another 150,000 Serbs were expelled. This ongoing trend took on tragic proportions following the war in Crete between Turkey and Greece in 1897. Diplomatic efforts to stem the tide of atrocities against Serbs were useless, but documentation remains to testify to the crimes committed against the Serbian population. The Balkan war of 1912 was fought not only by Serbs but by Montenegrins, Bulgarians, and Greeks to liberate their people from centuries of uninterrupted Islamic aggression. The situation is little changed today.
To understand Kosovo, the American people need to compare the current Balkan crisis with its own American Civil War in which just 4% of the population lost their lives compared to Serbia who lost 52% of her adult male population in WWI and another 26% of her overall population in WWII. Readers of this forum need reminding that during the American Civil War it was the loyal Virginia citizens who refused to secede from the union and formed the state of West Virginia in 1863. Certainly Serbs deserve the same rights to remain in their union, a union which was internationally recognized as a nation in 1878 at the Congress of Berlin.
Not a single head of state, nor any American president, senator, or humanitarian group raised their voices as 200,000 Serbs were \"ethnically cleansed\" from Kosovo in the last 2 decades. People should be asking, why are the Serbs destined to suffer and be persecuted?
In September 1992, Jehoshua Porat, reporting in the Israeli daily Ha\'Artz, claimed: \"It seems we have caught the same syndrome as the Russians -- fear that we shall lose billions of dollars from the United States and the West if we say something good about Serbs.\" Serbs are perplex when the media proclaims Kosovo as Serbian territory, then encourages the Albanians who comprise a majority in just the last 40 years, to secede and seek self-determination while denying the Serbs that same right in Croatia in 1991 in areas where Serbs were the majority and in Bosnia in 1992 where Serbs represented 31% of the population and owned 62% of the land. It was arrogant that the world awarded the Bosnian Muslims for gaining their majority population through their genocide of the Serbs in WWII. Awarding the Albanians for the same disgusting deeds in Kosovo would make a mockery of democratic principles.
During King Milutin\'s reign of 40 years (1281-1321), he built 40 churches in Kosovo. There are more than 140 Serbian churches and monasteries in Kosovo, a significant number having been built before 1459. More than 75 were built after 1459. There are also more than 80 church ruins that date prior to 1459. The actual seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church was first established in Kosovo at the Pec Patriarchate in 1346 (pictured at the top of this page). The Patriarchate remained in Pec until 1939, when in fear of WWII it was moved to Belgrade. The surviving Monasteries of Pec, Decani, The Virgin of Ljeviska, and Gracanica are monuments to the Serbian people, their dedication to their faith, and a testimony to their cultural achievements.
The time has come for a more balanced and fair assessment of the situation and a review of the facts, not hysterical propaganda. As the Very Rev. Mateja Matejic has observed, \"Serbs were the first to anticipate the grave peril coming at one time from Islam and then from Nazism and finally Communism. They were the first to resist ... making the victories of others possible, even if they themselves were defeated.\"
The following pages of this forum are intended to provide the discerning American reader with historical facts unethically withheld from them by the partisan press and American politicians with a hidden agenda in the Balkans.

Yes, good point. And note that it was Jesus' disciple, who had heard his teaching and went everywhere with him. Note that it does not say, "Woe unto that my by whom he is crucified."
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

OK, all these conversations, if one can call them that, which cite nothing but Scriptural passages put into some weird context are cryptic and rather snide.
The main issue at play is the safety of Serbs still living in Kosovo and also the safety of Orthodox monasteries and churches which have been there for centuries. Kosovo independence, it seems to me, is simply the last domino to fall in a long line starting in 1389.
I don\'t know how the Kosovo Serbs can be faulted since they\'ve been a minority on the defensive for centuries, being terrorized into fleeing their homeland by the Albanian majority. The policies of the Serbian government are another issue, and the legacy of communism should not be overlooked when passing judgement.

I think another important issue is who has the right to determination over Kosovo: Serbia, Kosovo, and/or the EU. My contention is that Serbia does not have the right to determination over Kosovo.
I agree that the issue is the safety of Serbs still living in Kosovo. However, I find it unfortunate that the safety of Albanians in Kosovo was a political question that was not nearly as widely discussed when Kosovo was a firm part of Yugoslavia. Nevertheless, I know that there was more tolerance towards Albanians under Yugoslavia than towards Serbs under the UN mandate. I think Milosovic made the Albanians nervous, however.

latest news:
the Greek newspaper \"Paron\" says that Serbia will sign a defensive agreement with Russia.
According to the journalist \"Russia is ready to transfer twelve heavy armed divisions to Serbia (Kossovo-Metohija included).

I\'ll believe this \"transfer\" when I see it, but I won\'t be surprised if I see it.
I don\'t like the idea of starting a war to protect people. We started the war in Iraq to protect the people of Iraq, and the Iraqis are in terrible shape. I disagreed when Clinton attacked Serbia, and I disagree just as strongly when Russia murmurs about attacking Kosovo.

Interesting and scary. Just what we need is another Balkan War.

Drev I\'d like to suggest that you go and spread the Gospel in Kosovo perhaps then you can some to understand what Christian suffering means for these fellow Christians living over there. Perhaps you should be the one to explain to a Serbian mother why her retarded child, who was living in a Monastery for safety, was murdered and butchered when he went for a haircut. How you can find blame in any of these Serbian Orthodox people living in Kosovo for what these terrorist mafiosos did is disturbing! You cannot condemn or judge anybody but yourself and even then you\'ll probably be wrong and would be better off seeking the guidance of a Priest. Subsequently, if you sir are a victim to mafia or gang violence I would certainly hope you were not judging as being deserving of such a thing and simply shrugged off since you didn\'t go into crime ridden Albanian ghettos dispersing Al Qadea, Mujahadeen, Bin Ladin the KLA and anyone else who\'s got their hand in the pot!! It\'s not the job of a Serbian Orthodox family to do ANYTHING!! other than live a Godly life and set a Godly example of love. There are those people would not listen to the Gospel if a Holy Saint himself were reading it to them. I think what you are preaching is \"Lazy Boy Recliner\" Orthodoxy and I think it\'s only because you REALLY don\'t understand the problem or you don\'t really care.
What did our Lord and Savior do wrong to be Crucified?
Who did the mobs choose to die? What did they chant?
Why have been Christians and Godly men been persecuted for centuries?
There is no escaping the reality of this hateful and spiteful world we must endure! When our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ are suffering and in need it is our duty to love them and help them as best as we can as they ARE our fellow brethren IN Christ. Do not be so bold as to sit in condemnation of our suffering Serbian Orthodox! Your words would bring great pain and not joy and relief into the heart of any Orthodox mom who\'s seen her family raped or murdered, or of any Orthodox Clergy who\'s seen his village and Parish burned!

I am grateful that you\'re not in a position of authority as this type of mentality would carve out Southern Serbia into an Albanian puppet state ran by terrorists!

Just one more thought I\'d like to add..
Drev, you make it sound as though the Orthodox who are today living in Southern Serbia are the ones reclining in their comforters, remote control in hand watching ESPN or CNN and just blatantly disregarding what’s going on in their neighborhoods... as if they\'re just not caring enough, eh? Orthodoxy is not a door to door religion, we are not Jehovah’s Witnesses. If you had, say, an influx of criminal gangs move into your community what would your Priest advise you?! I am sure he\'d tell you to pray for them and to stay away! I don\'t know of any Priest that would advise an Orthodox Christian or an Orthodox family to walk into gangland USA or any other dangerous situation as such.
Serbia is a Sovereign Orthodox nation and has been for many centuries through many wars, trails and tribulations. What is being done to her is torture and it is criminal.
Some of the messages on these forums regarding what’s happening over there are simply shocking and wrong and are so grossly incorrect and negligent. Some of the replies and messages I have read are truly disturbing as well. In one message. from someone who shares a similar view to your own, I was told not to sign off my message to him with \"Good Luck\" as he is a 20th Century Christian and not some peasant who believes in superstitious nonsense, What then is a 20th Centaury Christian? Am I some superstitious old peasant? This is bigotry.
Serbia is a Sovereign Nation and will remain as such. Peasants or not.

Suppose things went back to peaceful from a military perspective....I suggest you take a vacation with the family to Kossovo to take a look at who the Albanians of the region are...
Take a little cash with you in case your wife is smuggled into sex-slavery and you think you can bribe them for her, or your children are jumped for Crossing themselves during lunch...
Am I painting the picture yet??....

I\'m sure you don\'t mean this, but you seem to be saying that all Kosovo Albanians are thugs, and that becoming a victim in Kosovo is inevitable. Maybe it would help if you clarified.

Drevyev,
You said.
Of course I don\'t mean the suggested excursion..
Which makes my point.
I will not clarify anything further, because I can see from the previous posts that the only purpose it would serve is a fruitless exchange of opinions and not even interpretations, very irrespectful to the current situation and the history.
At the same time, humanity has always been at war, and fairness is not what we do best, so I am not surprised though I am very saddened and ashamed of the unilateral illegal backdoor decisions being forced on a sovereign nation.
Above all, I marvel at the fruits of propaganda.
The Great Fast is indeed approaching, and I am having difficulty finding the balance of political debate with keeping a peaceful heart.
I am tired though of forum threads that conclude with half or non truths only for lack of time or because they have to stop from a spiritual standpoint.
Yes, the spiritual is much more important that reaching the truth in any argument.
But in these cases, it only leads to more bad information..
Anyway, Nikola has done a great job providing articles.
There is little more to be said.

Hope and Johnchan,
I agree that the purpose is to see the spiritual base of this debate. The question I ask myself is what is the responsibility of the Orthodox Christian: American in the US, Serb in Serbia, or Albanian in Albania. Yes, we must pray for God\'s mercy on all those involved. But does our responsibility go beyond that? Should we participate in peaceful, pro-Serbian rallies? Should we speak out against violent, nationalist rallies and the crimes of thugs on both sides?
More importantly, what does this sort of political event say about our own, individual spiritual state? When faced with such a horrible period as the Balkans have experienced since the beginning of the 90s, how do we carry out the Gospel?
As for my own answer, I have found that these sorts of events make me look more closely at those who are suffering. It makes me see how easily I can fall away from the Gospel and look for who\'s right and whose wrong, although God knows that all are sinners. Finally, it makes me see how little I myself do for the one who is suffering.
