Hello, my brothers and sisters in Christ!
As You can read, my name is Radoslav Males and Im from Serbia. I was allways wondered how is to be a Orthodox Christian in western world so I decided to became a member of this forum, forum of the western \\"Eastern Christians\\".
Btw, I\'m 29 years old, I am Orthodox cathehet and a student of the Theological Faculty of the Orthodox Church in Belgrade, last year of studing (I started studing little bit later). I live in Novi Sad town(400 000 citizens). After changing of the communist regime in Serbia, people, esspecially young ones, returned to their Orthodox faith and traditions, which is showing that Orthodoxia is faith of young people at first, and those who are young in their hearts!
Please brothers and sisters, sorry for my bad english. I hope You\'ll understand something.
Luv You all! Radoslav.

Dobro jutro ! (which it would be for you, as I write, considering the time differential !) Well, at age 53, I could be your mother -- so I thought I would reply as a representative \"old person\" ! I do not remember Serbian language, although when I was in my early twenties, the company for which I worked paid university costs for me to learn enough Serbian to translate documents related to coal gasification.
I converted to Orthodoxy at age 21, while an undergraduate in college. While in graduate school, I met my husband, who attended the same parish.
Best wishes, in Christ, to you !
Antonia
Dobro jutro, Antonia! Thank you very much for your welcoming. As I understood, you became Orthodox before meeting your husband?! Selfinitiativ? Thats great.

Welcome Radoslav.
Sorry I did not see this thread earlier.
Being an \\"Eastern Christian\\" in the West is an interesting experience for me - maybe because I am obviously ethnically farther Eastern than the Eastern Christians - yet have been brought up Western. I did not know anything about the Orthodox Church until 2002 when my friend Fr Martin introduced me to his faith.
I was very resistant, and am embarrassed for all the things I said to him. But thanks be to God for bringing me to illumination.

I became an Eastern Christian while living in the west. I think I grew up in the epitome of the contemporary western experience, as I was born and raised in suburban Seattle. I read a lot growing up, and in college I read about the Orthodox Church, began attending, and was received! That was Holy Saturday 2005.
Since then, I\'ve had many mixed experiences, but here I will share only the blessings. I am providentially blessed to live in the cradle of several parishes and even a local monastery - almost all of them in a language I can understand with words to break my hardened heart. I am also blessed to have so many friends I\'ve made from throughout area parishes. My family is supportive, my job is supportive, my living situation is VERY favorable (I live two blocks from our Cathedral), and the Church is amazingly supportive. Our Cathedral\'s community gave us a car, almost all of our furniture, almost all of our kitcehnware, a few meals and much amazing advice. Recently, we attended the annual pilgrimage at the local Monastery and were deeply touched by their hospitality and glowing faith in Jesus Christ.

I don\'t think I\'ve ever listened to Ritam Nereda but back then I was a big fan of Baja Mali Kninja... His song \\"Bozich Je\\" is still hear wrenching to me and not to mention the fact that Knin is amazing.

Wonderful to see another Serb on here! 10 years ago I visited Novi Sad right after the war. (I actually stayed at the house of a member of the band Ritam Nereda - do you remember them?) I remember the Freedom Bridge was still down - I always wished I spent more time in your city.
Best of luck with the seminary!

Yes, that were terrible times! But, it is our way of salvation, i suppose. However, i think we showed to the western (today nonchristian) civilisation what means defending of country and christian bravery. It is ununderstandable to them, they cant understand our irational rationalism.
Yes, I know band Ritam Nereda. They are very good band and guys. I have had the chance to met some of them (singer). Maybe if You come to Novi Sad some other time, we could meet eachother. Best wishess in Christ.

Hi there,
I guess I\'m not as much welcoming you as saying \\"We\'re in the same box\\" so to speak :)
I hope to see you around and good luck with your studies, good choice!

hello Radoslav
Welcome
I also am Serbian, to your question about orthodoxy in the west, I also would say most westerners do not know much about the Orthodox Church. It\'s like a well kept secret here in the midwest USA.
