Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Appear on 60 Minutes Segment on Orthodox Christianity
New York, NY
12/16/2009
Photo caption: CBS News Anchor Bob Simon of the program 60 Minutes, discusses Orthodox Christianity with His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at the Halki Orthodox Theological Seminary.
His All Holiness Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians who constitute the second largest Christian denomination in the world, will be featured on the CBS News program 60 Minutes reported by Bob Simon, scheduled to air on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 7 p.m. EST. The segment will focus on the Orthodox Church, the most ancient Christian church, and its development from its earliest years to modern times in what is now the Republic of Turkey.
His All Holiness was named 11th among the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine and was awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal for his efforts to promote human rights and religious tolerance. He has also been recognized by the United Nations as a Laureate Champion of the Earth for his pioneering work to protect the environment. Affectionately known as \"the Green Patriarch,\" Patriarch Bartholomew has called upon leaders of all denominations to join him in this effort, noting simply that \"If life is sacred, so is the entire web that sustains it.\"
His All Holiness recently concluded an extended visit to the U.S., where he participated in an environmental symposium in Mississippi, ministered to the five million Orthodox faithful in America, and met with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and President Barack Obama, among many others. He is the author of Encountering the Mystery (Doubleday) and In the World, Yet Not of the World (Fordham).

Commenting on the upcoming broadcast, Archbishop Demetrios of America said:
\"The appearance of the Ecumenical Patriarch on a program such as 60 Minutes is an extraordinary opportunity for the American public to become aware of our Orthodox Christian Faith. Millions of people who would otherwise have limited knowledge of the Orthodox Church will have the chance to see and hear the highest ecclesiastical personage of our Church in their living rooms. It is also a tremendous opportunity for our own Orthodox Faithful in the United States to see His All Holiness in a way that will surely touch their hearts and minds with love and deep respect.\"
60 Minutes is the pre-eminent investigative television news show in the United States and has run on CBS since 1968. It has been among the top-rated TV programs for much of its life and has garnered numerous awards over the years. The show will also be broadcast over the internet on the 60 Minutes website: www.60minutes. com

\" .... the spiritual leader .... \" ??? Is His All Holiness the \"Pope\" of Orthodox Christianity ??? I think not.
True, this is a great opportunity to lessen the \"best kept secret in America\". However, I for one will keep a scutinizing eye on this segment .... Curious to see how much emphasis CBS puts on the \"green\" topic compared to enriched conversation of the Orthodox Church.

Ya know growing up Orthodox I often heard the previous Patriarch Demetrious I referred to as the Orthodox Pope.
Coming into my adulthood of course its technically wrong. But ya know what, to make things simple for someone who doesn't know the structure, the concept of separate but equal its not that big of a deal.
Give a little love, and patience this isn't an issue of official theology, it doesn't change any critical issue. Just a marketing issue so those whom don't know have an idea whom Bartholomew is to Orthodoxy.
For now he is given the title of first amongst equals, which is an honor long given to the Patriarch of Constantinople. Let him have this honor it hurts nothing. Instead let us be proud of how well he's representing Orthodoxy, how well regarded he is being held and look forward to some positive journalism.

Thanks Orthonut, I was going to say something but let it slide because Art has a propensity to go into esoteric points. I thought stating that it was of course wrong would be sufficient but I was of course ... wrong.
But if anyone did catch the show, they did refer to the Partarich as something to the effect as Pope to the Orthodox. They did say he's the spiritual leader of 300 million. Oh well, their hearts were in the right place. (cringes as he feels Art coming at him again for something someone else did)
I hope it makes some sort of call to action, perhaps Greece shouldn't fight Turkey's admission to the EU if equal rights and religious freedom can be encouraged.
That all aside, I pray that people see the history and beauty of Orthodoxy. I hope people love Bartholomew's humbleness. But most especially I hope and pray that this simple little news story brings someone closer to Christ.
And a big fat merry Christmas to ya'll!

I like this Cappadokia so much. It's christian almost since the beginning.
By the way: why is the name of this show \"60 Minutes\"? It lasts only 14:22. Odd.

As for 14:22 that is how long one segment of the show last. 60 minutes is usually divided into three segments.

I couldn't find that other video on 60minutes.com. I found one video about the only Christian village left in the Holy Land, and then one or two other videos about the EP. But I don't remember seeing the video of the woman breaking down.

I am so thankful that instead of focusing on Green Initiatives they finally focused on the very very real issues and showed history and Truth!

The Patriarch of Constantinople IS the first among of equals within the Orthodox Church and Constantinople became the \"New Rome\" when the Western Church went into schism. It's an easy mistake for the show to state the situation the way it did. They didn't have time to go into all the details and sometimes the best you can give the public in one short sentence is an approximation they can relate to.

Somsoc: what you write is exactly how the Bishop of Rome became the Pope. Christians gave a 'little positive understanding' that lead to an 'august Rex position' in Rome. Eventually, more recently, in the 1960's (Vatican II), this authority swerved Christianity into a Modernist ecumenical movement that has neutralized Christian spiritual authority in every area. As noted ealier at the beginning of the 20th century, Pope Pius X saw this irreversible trend in Western Europe and many areas in Latin America that he identified as Modernism - he called it the 'heresy of heresies'. Now, increasingly, we find that the 'green' Patriarch Bartholomew is in tune with this initiative. It is of some concern.
And what initiative is that? And how is he in league with it? If you are refering to protecting the environment it seems that is more modernistic to pollute it and treat it as a giant dust bin. Only in Protestant traditions(particularly Calvinism) will you find the concept that when God says to subdue the Earth it means we can do what ever we want to it. After all according to them God is going to rapture everybody and eventually destroy the planet entirely so who cares what we do to it. That certainly doesn't sound very Orthodox to me.
