The Patriarch of Constantinople IS the first among of equals within the Orthodox Church and Constantinople became the \"New Rome\" when the Western Church went into schism. It's an easy mistake for the show to state the situation the way it did. They didn't have time to go into all the details and sometimes the best you can give the public in one short sentence is an approximation they can relate to.
