My sister and her boyfriend are getting married in September. They are hoping to have a Saturday wedding with an outdoor reception afterwards. The priest at our home parish, where they wish to be married, has concerns about a Saturday wedding and has suggested that the Church prefers Sunday weddings. We were just trying to find out if this really is the case.

I don\'t think there\'s a prohibition on Saturday weddings, but practically speaking, if people are going to be partying at the reception, maybe missing Vespers, maybe drinking too much, etc. are they preparing themselves for Liturgy on Sunday morning? I think the priest\'s concern might be a pastoral one.

The reception is going to be held at a local park so it will be alcohol free and over by dusk which should fall before Vespers.

That also applies to the evening AFTER receiving communion. Of course, should one apply strict rules on this sort of thing, one might end up being blamed by St. Paul and St. John Chrysostom for a litany of evils far, far worse.

Greek jurisdictions, in my experience, have few problems with Saturday weddings. Slavic jurisdictions (ROCOR, MP, Serbian, etc) usually refuse point-blank a Saturday wedding, for various reasons, not least of which being the matter of conjugal intimacy on the eve of Sunday, which is regarded as a feast.
Slavic priests will also consult their liturgical calendar to check if any Sunday is the eve of a feast, which would render that Sunday off-limits. Friday weddings are often done, if a particular Sunday is unsuitable.

My dad called the Bishop after someone asked to have a Saturday wedding, and the bishop said that it is not allowed unless the wedding is in the morning and the reception is finished by a certain time so that people won\'t miss vespers because of it.

The plan is to have the wedding around 11 am and the reception from 1-5 pm. Since the reception is to take place at a local park about a mile from the church people should have no trouble making Vespers at 6 pm.
