This is a page dedicated to Saint Kassiani, the 9th Century Byzantine abbess, poet, composer, and hymnographer.  St Kassiani's secular name is Kassia.  Her saint name has a variation of spellings:   Kassiane, Kassiani, Casia, Ikasia, Cassia, Cassiane, Kassiana, or Eikasia.   St Kassiane's feast day is September 7, and she is also remembered on the Sunday of Orthodoxy for her part in the defense of the holy icons.  St Kassiane is one of the first medieval composers whose scores are both extant and able to be interpreted by modern scholars and musicians.  Sometimes Hildegard von Bingen is credited by Western scholars with being the first, but since St. Kassiane lived two centuries before her, it is St. Kassiane who is indeed the first.  Approximately fifty of St Kassiane's hymns are extant and twenty-three are included in Orthodox Church liturgical books. The exact number is difficult to assess, as many hymns are ascribed to different authors in different manuscripts and are often identified as anonymous.   In addition, some 789 of her non-liturgical verses survive. Many are epigrams or aphorisms called "gnomic verse", for example, "I hate the rich man moaning as if he were poor."   In acadamia, St. Kassiane is notable as one of only two Byzantine women to write in their own names during the middle ages.

There is a great story about how his icon was found. He requested that, whenever somebody asked his help, and found whatever it was they were looking for, that they bake a cake in his honor, and in memory of his mother, whose soul he was worried about. The Blessed Martyr Yevgeny Rodionov was a Russian soldier of the First Chechen War. He was captured by Chechen Muslims and tortured and killed for refusing to renounce his Orthodox Christian Faith and convert to Islam. He was beheaded on his 19th birthday, and though he did not grow up surrounded by pious people, he never removed the cross which his grandmother had given him to wear. For the brave and valorous act of refusing to give up the cross he wore and Him Who was crucified upon it, Blessed Martyr Yevgeny Rodionov gave his life for the love of Jesus Christ on May 10/23, 1996. His veneration is growing in Russia and around the world. There have been books published about his life, blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Alexis II, there is a church dedicated to him, a service has been written, and there are numerous icons, some of which are myrrh-streaming. Still, he has not yet been universally glorified. For this, we wait for the will of God, the recognition and blessing of our God-fearing hierarchs, and the love of faithful Orthodox Christian people throughout the world. May we have Blessed Martyr Yevgeny's prayers and take inspiration from his unyielding confession of faith.
