Hello everyone! I am pretty new to Orthodoxy, and have been attending St. Michael Mission in Dothan, AL when I can. I listen to almost every Orthodox podcast I can find, and am so eager to learn. I was raised in the Anglican Church, and have been inconsistent in attendance for the past 20 years after a falling out occurred at the church. Father Lester Angwin, who baptized and confirmed me, had mentioned that I should try to find an Orthodox Church (He left the Anglican Church in the 70's) to attend, and I didn't really pay any attention until his passing in 2007. I think of him often now, and finally took the 2 hour drive to St. Michael Mission. I am now hooked, and can't wait until the next service! The church is currently without a permanent priest, so services are usually only twice a month at most. I am very excited to find a faith I feel I belong to, and that accepts me with open arms. I hope to learn more about the faith here, and to meet others with similar experiences. Thanks for having me! :)

Hi,
I'm a few more hours north in Birmingham. I think you'll find lots of good info here on OC.
Orthodoxyinamerica.org has a church locator function. There are 5 churches within 84 miles of Tallahassee, so maybe you could check out another church when the priest isn't at St. Michael's?
Glad to see you here.
84 mile radius ?!?! Good one Nellie lol .... Not everyone on this site has a helicopter like you do. ;)

I'm from around Dothan. Still have family there. I had been wondering about St. Michael's for when my wife and I go home for a visit. Sounds like we should call ahead.

Ah, Tampa. Grew up in Clearwater, and got my first real job in Tampa. Lived there for 2 years and met my husband at work. I have lots of fond memories there. ;)

Yep. It takes a little preparation. Father Andrew of St. Stephen's near Atlanta comes down about twice a month, but you don't really know which Sundays until about a week or 2 before. I am on his email list, so I stay updated that way. :)

There is a St Michael's mission also in Huntsville, but that is more northerly. My brother lives in Tallahassee, not Orthodox though. If I ever visit, I will look up the mission.

You may have already discovered this by now, but there is a Greek Orthodox church located right in Tallahassee:
Holy Mother of God Church
1645 Phillips Road
The content of their website shows that the church is much more Pan-Orthodox than ethnic Greek Orthodox. It is interesting that up until recently there was no Orthodox church/mission in this moderate sized city which would have also served as an outreach for University of Florida State students.

Yep, I tried that church years ago and was treated horribly. Even the Priest failed to say hello to me. Half the service was in Greek, and I was by myself. I haven't had the will or courage to try them again. Hopefully they are not as snobbish as they were back then. Thanks for the info!

Hello Kimberly,
I lived many years in Tallahassee. The Greek church has been there for many many years.
I visited that Greek Orthodox church before. Be careful not to misinterpret people's behavior until you are immersed in their culture, especially if you are American coming from American churches where things are done differently.
In addition to the Greek church there's the Coptic Orthodox church. Check their website at http://www.tlhcopts.org/joomla/ or http://www.suscopts.org and click on the links The DioceseChurchesFloridayTallahassee

The next day after visiting that Church, a member spotted me while I was working and asked me if I had been at her church the day before. I told her I had, and she asked if anyone came up to me. I told her no, and she said they were bad about being rude to outsiders. That was a long time ago. It's probably a lot better now, but I think I will continue to support St. Michael. I really feel comfortable there. ;)

Good, after all that's what one needs, to be in fellowship with a church. It doesn't matter which one, as long as it's one that supports your faith and beliefs. I was under the impression that you were looking and thought of letting you know of what's available in Tallahassee.
About the feeling for the Greek church (I am not of that church by the way), I just thought that we all should be careful with these things. Having been around different churches from different denominations and different cultures, I can see how the culture differences can cause negative feelings on outsiders....that's all.

I agree. My feelings for the Greek church are good. I know that all churches are not like that.
