There\'s a add-on for Firefox called AdBlock Plus that serves the same purpose.

AdBlock Plus works by subscribing to a regularly updated list of filters and I find that this list is comprehensive enough that I rarely see anything get past it. You can also define your own filters for those few instances that something does get past (which is pretty easy, just hover over the ad, whereupon a little \\"Block\\" tab will show up, click the \\"Block\\" tab, and then click \\"OK\\" on the dialog box that pops up).
