If anyone here has not seen the Russian film "the island" they really ought to. It's about an Russian Orthodox monk, who is a fool-for-Christ. Such a wonderful movie. It's in russian and the title is something like OCPOB.

That movie is also called "Ostrov" (Which is the translation of "The Island" in those Russian characters into English).Best Orthodox Movie I have ever seen. My favourite "Good" movie by far, it takes a bit to start it, but I've watched it at least 4 times and it's excellent. Something to watch sometime each year, I watched it last during Great Lent - it wasn't intentional then, but I think maybe I should make that my own little tradition so I can always remember to see it.Peter

Yes, I wait for movies to come out on DVD. I really loved this movie. The story unfolds so wonderfully - and Sigourney Weaver is a marvelous narrator. I especially like how the seeming \"minor\" character plays an important role in pulling all the themes together - namely, you can't tell a person's character by the outside, and that there is nothing more powerful than forgiveness.

Just saw this film, on DVD (via netflix). The story unfolds so simply and the characters shine through without needing excessive dialogue. Don't bother with the 1992 version. Stick to the original 1955 film and use the English soundtrack if you don't speak spanish and don't want to read subtitles. It's excellent.
Hollywood has overdone it, and not just a bit! The rubbish which it churns out constantly promoting vulgarity, violence and sexuality for profit, has rendered the industry a propaganda machine for immorality and irresponsibliity. It\'s no wonder that things are getting worse....so is it nurture or nature? Are movies and other programs simply reflecting the state of society or are they influencing the degredation of our society? What\'s for certain is that human degradation (e.g. the exploitation of women) is apparent in hollywood productions and nobody but nobody is voicing concern. We are content with movie classifications in order to satisfy our modern day weakness, indulging in over-recreation, as if it were our only purpose on earth, while contributing very little time to the things that matter most like raising our children not just properly but properly Orthodox. We may say that using proper judgement when doing anything is the best defense against scandalyzing one\'s senses, however, I refuse to be placed in a postion where I must first be scandalyzed and then use proper judgement. Food for thought.
Recently, my family and I were subjected to a very vulgar ad while watching a documentary on how mustard is produced from the seeds. The ad, which was on one of the supposed \'decent\' educational channels, featured three women praising a disgusting (truly revolting) product manufactured by a prophylactic company. We couldn\'t change the channel fast enough. I highly recommend using a tv service that not only has parental controls but allows you to modify the channel line up so that only the channels you specify are available. A DVR, which allows you to fast forward through commercials or unwanted content in recorded programs, is also good idea.
It is not an off topic, actually it is quite relative. I completely agree with you that if by the same token our actions words and thoughts are Christ-oriented, provided that they are done within the proper context, then there is the possibility of influencing those around us. However, will will not avoid being ridiculed by one or many----then so be it I say.
My intention for mentioning the number 666 in my initial post was simply to present a very practical explanation that is overlooked when concentrating on this eschatological issue, that the world around us is degenerating and that the cause in-part would seem to be the entertainment media which has absolutely no scruples, regularly churning out programs which appeal to our desires and weaknesses, something which infuences profoundly the way people think and the way people act. The media acts as a most unholy teacher. We are called upon to combat our weaknesses not cultivate them.
