We Orthodox like to say, “Beauty will save the world.” But why should Beauty be so significant as opposed to Goodness or Truth? What does it even mean for something to be beautiful? And why should Orthodox think they have some special relationship to it? In an attempt to get answers, we will engage a wide range of thinkers, from Fr. Alexander Schmemann, to modern thinkers like Immanuel Kant, Sigmund Freud, and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as Church Fathers like St. Dionysius the Areopagite and St. Maximus the Confessor. In so doing, we will begin to see how for Orthodox, Beauty is always expressive of Theophany: of personal encounter with the Glory of God. So join us as we explore the meaning, purpose and role of Beauty in the Orthodox tradition, and how the project of Modernity has so radically departed from it.
