HI,
This summer I was given Two ELders on the Jesus Prayer, and it is great. Fr. Ambrose (Young) and Abbess Theadelphi from the Skete of the Entrance of the Theotokos have put this out. It is the teachings on the Jesus prayer by Elder Joseph the Hesychast of the Holy Mountain and Archbishop Anthony (Golynsky-Mihailovsky) of Russia. The introduction alone was inspiring.
Archbishop ANthony will not be a name most people have heard of, but he presents very practical approaches for lay people to practice the Jesus prayer. ....start on the road to sobriety. I find him very approachable, and not overwhelming. As a homeschooling mother of three, I just don\'t have the mental stamina to take on the Philokalia. I am sure there are many out there who are light years ahead of me on this, and that it OKAY. A. Anthony lays out a simple approach to gradually get this prayer into your daily life. OR suggests a way. Apparently much of this material has been gathered from notes he would leave for his spiritual children. I have yet to get to the Elder Joseph section as I am trying to digest slowly what I am reading from A. ANthony. Slow growth being good growth.
Presently my favorite reads are/have been:
•Road To Emmaus quarterly- what a great way to travel through the world of Orthodoxy without having to leave home (much cheaper these days!)
found at: http://www.roadtoemmaus.net/
•Surprised by Christ by Fr. James Bernstein-
This is another book I can\'t say enough about.
It is a terrific book to give to people who may or may not be interested in Orthodoxy. I feel like I can give this to my family and they will not feel like they are being run over by an evangelical Orthodox train. For enquirers and beyond it is a good read. (Conciliar Press)
•Two Elders on the Jesus Prayer- I already mentioned this above, but it is my ongoing recent read, and I just can\'t say enough about how helpful it is.
Check it out here: http://users.rio.com/bamm/2elders/
• The Pastor\'s Wife by Sabina Wurmbrand
My daughter and I are reading this outloud as her bedtime reading. It ranks right up there with the Hiding Place and others of this type....except I have been much more struck by how unreal (to me) life under communism not only in Russia, but also in Romania. I can\'t even begin to conceive of how these people survived. I read another book by a Princess Nikolai Galitzine this summer as well...she writes about her life after the Russian revolution. It is beyond me....but I am thankful to have read it. Next I guess I must really tackle the Gulag Archipeligo...just some uplifting reading. Lots to learn about really relying on God.

Everytime I read the title of this post, my brain registers, \\"Two Elders, on their way to Emmaus were surprised by Jesus.\\" :)

That is funny. It is actually true too - if you think about it!
