I\'m sure most everyone has now read about the plans to charge a $5 subscription fee for this web site, starting at the end of November. I suspect that most of you feel, as I do, that this would ultimately lead to the death of this community.
I\'m not starting a new thread to complain, however. I\'m starting this thread to show my support for the future of this site, and to set an example that I hope will be followed by those who can.
I pledge to donate $10 per month to this site if and only if it remains free. If this site becomes \"subscribers only\" I will be unable to invite my friends, and everyone that I currently know on the site will be leaving anyway.
There are other ways of raising money beyond user donations and advertising, as well, and I\'d suggest that another thread be started to brainstorm about such ideas. (I\'d start one myself now, but I really need to hit the road, and I\'ll be driving all day today.)
I believe in the value of this site, and I\'m willing to support it financially, but I firmly believe (for a multitude of reasons that I won\'t bother to go into right now) that mandatory subscriptions would kill it.
It\'s my hope that others will make additional pledges of conditional support in this thread.
Regards,
